Introduction
I am Delaney Armstrong, I previously interned as a Private Equity Analyst at Instar Asset Management and CPS Capital and worked in Financial Institutions Audit at KPMG. I’m currently finishing my studies in Accounting and Financial Management at the University of Waterloo, where I’ve served as a Senior Portfolio Manager for our Student Investment Fund, managing an over $600,000 AUM portfolio. Outside of school, I love trying new restaurants, great books, and learning to play tennis. |
Career Motivation
My journey into finance started a bit differently, I had never touched accounting or finance in high school and decided to see what I could learn at Waterloo. At first I was drawn to Accounting doing my first Co-op in audit, the following school term I joined the Student Investment Fund and this cemented my interest in the field of finance. That curiosity deepened as I explored the public and private markets in school clubs, internships, and eventually live deals.
I gravitated toward private equity because I love the mix of strategic thinking in the deal process and hands-on involvement in growing businesses during the asset management phase. I was then able to explore this interest deeper through my amazing experiences at Instar Asset Management and CPS Capital.
Co-op Reflection
One of the most rewarding parts of the work I have been able to get involved in so far is seeing the tangible impact of my efforts. Whether that is supporting a deal process, conveying investment decisions or strategic long term planning, my contributions have felt meaningful.
Advice for Students At Waterloo we are often taught well on a technical basis from accounting to finance and strategy principals, however the skills I have developed in communication and critical thinking have allowed me to make the most of each of my co-op opportunities. My advice is not to overlook the soft skills, they can help bridge the gap of the existing knowledge you have and the requirements to not only get the job done, but excel. |
