Introduction
|
My name is Charlene, and I’m currently in my 3B term of Accounting and Financial Management at the University of Waterloo.
To date, I’ve completed co-op terms across investment banking and private equity, and will be returning to investment banking as a 2026 Summer Analyst with Morgan Stanley. That said, I’m hoping to use my remaining co-op terms to diversify my professional experience and explore new opportunities. Outside of school and work, I’ve recently gotten into endurance sports, and I love playing volleyball and ultimate frisbee. I also enjoy cooking, trying new restaurants and bakeries, and traveling—most recently to Madeira! |
Career Motivation
My interest in finance brewed from a mix of personal influences and on-campus experiences.
At home, finance was always part of the conversation. My dad enjoys following markets and has the news on constantly. My older brother started in accounting and transitioned into finance, so he’s been a huge mentor and role model to me.
Once I entered university, it was the clubs and communities I joined that really solidified my path. Through groups like ACE Consulting Group and Waterloo Private Capital, I met peers whose drive and passion inspired me, as well as upper-year mentors who shared advice and guidance as I navigated career decisions.
Co-op Reflection
Stay Keen & Keep Your Energy Up:
Always be curious, ask questions, show a genuine desire to learn, and don’t let tiredness show. Co-op can be exhausting, but it’s only for four months. Be the positive energy on your team and leave a strong impression especially since you’re only there for a term. People want to work with someone who’s upbeat and eager, not a “Debbie Downer” – the negativity will drain your mental strength too.
Own Your Experience:
While the team and company culture play a role, how much you learn and enjoy your co-op is ultimately in your hands. Want to work on a certain project? Ask. Want to connect more with your team? Invite someone for coffee or suggest a group lunch. Don’t just wait to be given opportunities, go after them.
